This particular round contains 2 troy ounces of .999 fine silver and pays tribute to a series that produced one of the rarest US coins: the 1885 Trade Dollar. All known original specimens of the 1885 mintage are accounted for, with only 5 coins in existence. The coin was designed by Charles Barber after being promulgated by The Coinage Act of 1873 in response to the competition faced with other large silver coins used in trade with East Asia. The first Trade Dollars were struck in 1873, with most being sent to China where they were used in trade. Due to its rarity in higher grades as well as its historical significance, most trade dollars command prices that are many multiples above any melt value.
