Description
Intaglio Mint was established in 2010 as a privately held “boutique” Mint headquartered in Ozark, Missouri. They are a full-service mint, with all facets of the coin-making process completed in-house. They are well-known for producing coins, tokens, medallions and rounds that commemorate special events, places, persons and other things of historical value.
This particular round contains 2 troy ounces of .999 fine silver and pays tribute to the first US Dollar coin struck since 1804 and designed by Christian Gobrecht. It is named the “Gobrecht Silver Dollar” due to its creator, who also prominently placed his name into the base of the coin right underneath the seated Lady Liberty. The coin has also been described as a prototype for the Seated Liberty Dollar (also created by Gobrecht), as there were multiple different die alignments and design changes that occurred throughout its minting. Due to public outcry regarding the prominence of the designer’s name on the coin, at least three obverse varieties exist, including the latter of the three designs which removed his name completely. There are two major die patterns for the reverse, with the most notable difference being in those with an eagle flying into a either starry field or no stars at all.
Obverse: The original design of Lady Liberty seated (with “C GOBRECHT F” inscribed in the base she sits upon) with a shield in one hand and a liberty cap on a stick in the other and the date of “1836” are inscribed.
Reverse: A depiction of a flying eagle with a starry field in the background, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” the weight and purity are all inscribed.
Diameter: 39mm; Thickness: 6mm.
