The American Silver Eagle coin is one of the most well known and collected silver bullion coins in the world.  With a stunningly beautiful design, a .999 fine silver content and one full ounce of silver, these coins have a face value of $1 USD and hold a legal tender status backed by the United States Government.  From their beginning in 1986 and continuing until 2021, the American Silver Eagle depicted a heraldic eagle on the reverse.  Later in 2021, the American Silver Eagle had several design modifications, both on the obverse and the reverse sides of the coin.  These design changes resulted in what is known as “Type 1” and “Type 2” varieties.  The most obvious design change is on the reverse, where the heraldic eagle was replaced with an eagle in flight.  However, there were changes made on the obverse as well, such as the addition of the “AW” monogram below “IN GOD WE TRUST”.  The “AW” monogram represents the initials of Adolph Weinman, who designed the Walking Liberty Half Dollar produced from 1916 thru 1947, and is the coin after which the American Silver Eagle was modeled.  There is also the addition of a security feature on the edge — the appearance of a “notch” in the reeding below the date.
