Description
This 2021 Great Britain White Lion of Mortimer is the eighth release of the 10 oz Silver Queen’s Beasts coins series. It contains 10 troy ounces of .9999 fine silver and is housed inside of a protective plastic capsule. It features the Lion of Mortimer, one of the 10 heraldic beasts used by royal ancestry as a symbol for their family bloodline. At the coronation of Her Majesty The Queen Elizabeth II in 1953, the 10 heraldic beasts stood guard, each sculpted by James Woodford RA and standing at six feet tall. They were inspired from the King’s Beasts of Henry VIII that still line the bridge over the moat at his Hampton Court Palace. Some of the other mythical creatures consist of lions, griffins, falcons, bulls, yales, greyhounds, horses, dragons and unicorns. The White Lion of Mortimer descended to Elizabeth II through Edward IV and, unlike the Lion of England, is uncrowned.
Obverse: Depiction of Her Majesty The Queen Elizabeth II, along with the denomination.
Reverse: The White Lion of Mortimer in an upright pose holding a shield marked by the “white rose en soleil.” Also inscribed re the weight, date and purity.
Diameter: 89.15 mm; Thickness: 6 mm.
