Description
This 1/4 oz .9999 fine gold coin from the U.S. Gov’s West Point Mint is limited to a strict mintage of 5,000 coins, comes in a presentation box with a protective capsule, and it commemorates the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower setting sail from the south coast of England to finally land in Cape Cod off of the coast of Massachusetts. The Puritan Pilgrims aboard The Mayflower were seeking religious freedoms and the hope of starting a new world free from oppression – ideals that founded the original United States of America and live on today. When these Puritans landed in the fall of 1620, it was too late to plant crops for harvest, and they would have been almost certainly doomed to survive if it weren’t for the friendly natives of the Wampanoag tribe donating food and supplies to help them get through the tough winter. This coin celebrates their triumph of survival as well as the kindness of the Wampanoag’s “givings” that helped them survive (and also founded the principles of Thanksgiving Day celebrated presently in the United States).
Obverse: Wampanoag family viewing the Mayflower arriving off of the coast. Also inscribed are “Patuxet” (the name for the Native American band of the Wampanoag tribal confederation) and the denomination backed by the U.S. Government.
Reverse: A male and female Puritan looking into the future of the New World with hope for success and prosperity. Also inscribed are the dates 1620 and 2020, the weight and purity.
Diameter: 22mm; Thickness: 1.87 mm.
