This 2001 90% silver (.7736 troy ounces of silver) proof buffalo coin from the U.S. Mint is a true tribute to the classic buffalo design! The coin features the iconic buffalo and Native American Chief design that the United States is renowned for using in its older coinage (such as the classic Buffalo Nickel). Unlike other buffalo rounds, this coin is dated, denominated and backed by the U.S. Government. The coin was issued with a maximum mintage of 500,000 to commemorate the recently opened National Museum of the American Indian of the Smithsonian Institution in 2001, and $10 of each sale was donated to The Smithsonian Institution at that time. The coin sold out very quickly, and the Smithsonian sought the production of an additional 250,000 or 500,000 coins, but the request was denied by the U.S. Treasury department. It comes in the original mint clear plastic case along with box and papers, and it is sure to please with its striking details only made possible in the proof design!

Obverse: The Native American Chief which is a tribute to the rich cultural heritage of the Native Americans. The date and the word “LIBERTY” are also inscribed.

Reverse: The American bison or buffalo, believed to have been inspired by Black Diamond: a resident buffalo at the Central Park Zoo. Also inscribed are the denomination and the words “IN GOD WE TRUST.”
