Starting in 1984, the US Mint began producing $5 gold commemorative coins to celebrate people, places or events that have had a significant impact on the United States.  Known as “Modern commemoratives” or “Modern commems”, these $5 gold coins are legal tender United States money, and are produced to the same standards as the $5 gold coins that circulated throughout the United States until the 1930s.  Containing just under a quarter ounce of pure gold at .2419 ounces of gold, these beautiful coins are a very convenient size.  With a relatively low premium relative to their actual gold weight, as well as their legal tender status, they offer an affordable and smart way to invest in gold.
