Description
The Cumberland Gap National Historic Park in Kentucky was chosen for this second of five releases of 2016 in the U.S. Mint’s popular America the Beautiful 5 oz silver program.
This coin honors an area where both Native Americans and settlers traveled west through a break in the Appalachian Mountain chain. Following the Revolutionary War, people wanting to settle further west toward the Mississippi Valley would travel through the Gap to get through the Appalachian Mountains. The Gap is located within the Cumberland Gap National Historic Park, and is located on the border of present-date Kentucky and Virginia, very near the Tennessee border.
During the Civil War, control of the Cumberland Gap changed hands a few times, but following the surrender of some 2,300 Confederate defenders in September of 1863, the Gap remained in Union control for the remainder of the war.
In May of 1980, the Cumberland Gap was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
