In addition the Specimen version is distinguished from the bullion version by the “P” mint mark engraved below “IN GOD WE TRUST”.
This coin commemorates the Homestead National Historical Park, built in order to memorialize the Homestead Act of 1862, a highly influential piece of legislation which allowed for the rapid settlement of the west by granting land to individuals under the condition that they cultivated and improved the property over the course of five years.
The reverse of this coin depicts several essential elements of survival among homesteaders, which include food, shelter and water.
