Description
This 2015 one troy ounce .9999 fine silver coin with selective gold plating is the sixth and final coin of the Legacy of the Canadian Nickel series. This six-coin series revisits the 5-cent coin designs that have been produced by the Royal Canadian Mint throughout its history. Each silver proof coin is at least twice the diameter and width of its 5-cent counterpoint, offering a closer look at the detailed engraving of the coin it is replicating. There is a strict mintage of only 8,500 coins for each of the six designs in the series.
The six coins in the Legacy of the Canadian Nickel series are as follows (in order of their release):
-
The Crossed Maple Bough
-
The Two Maple Leaves
-
The Victory
-
The Identification of Nickel
-
The Centennial 5-Cent Coin
-
The Beaver
The Beaver is the design that most people likely recall when they think about the Canadian nickel, as this very same design is still in use today since its introduction in 1937. In 1936, The Royal Canadian Mint asked George Edward Kruger-Gray, whose designs had already been utilized and praised throughout the British Empire, to assist in modernizing Canada’s circulating coins. Three of Kruger-Gray’s designs were accepted to be used: the maples leaves on the reverse of the penny, the Coat of Arms of Canada on the 50-cent piece, and the beloved beaver design we see here. An ode to the hard-working dam-builder, this design was very fitting for the young nation of Canada who was seeking to gain autonomy from Great Britain (which it had only gained independence from a few years prior).
