Description
This 2015 one troy ounce .9999 fine silver coin with selective gold plating is the first coin of the Legacy of the Canadian Nickel series. This six-coin series revisits the 5-cent coin designs that have been produced by the Royal Canadian Mint throughout its history. Each silver proof coin is at least twice the diameter and width of its 5-cent counterpoint, offering a closer look at the detailed engraving of the coin it is replicating. There is a strict mintage of only 8,500 coins for each of the six designs in the series.
The six coins in the Legacy of the Canadian Nickel series are as follows (in order of their release):
-
The Crossed Maple Bough
-
The Two Maple Leaves
-
The Victory
-
The Identification of Nickel
-
The Centennial 5-Cent Coin
-
The Beaver
On January 2, 1908 the Ottawa branch of the Royal Mint first opened — marking the dawn of the Royal Canadian Mint. Although the designs were still originating from London, coins were now being minted in Canada for Canadian circulation. Although the first 5-cent pieces were not yet made from nickel, the crossed maple bough was the first of the 5-cent coins, designed by William Henry James Blakemore, to be produced in the very early days of the Royal Canadian Mint. The reverse is an homage to St. Edward’s Crown, the solid gold coronation crown. The obverse is the effigy of King George V, the reigning monarch from 1910 to 1936. The design continued to be used from 1911 until it was replaced in 1921.
