Description
The Silver 5-oz ATB 2013 Fort McHenry America the Beautiful Coin was inspired by the history-altering victory at Fort McHenry during the Battle of Baltimore in 1814 . This beautiful 5 oz. silver coin commemorates Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine and contains .999 fine silver and is one of the largest bullion coin ever released by the U.S. mint.
Each obverse of the coins in the series features the portrait of George Washington by John Flanagan, used on the quarter since 1932.
The reverse depicts the “Defenders Day” celebration, which is considered the primary annual event held at Fort McHenry. The fireworks evident on the design symbolize “the rocket’s red glare,” linking the fort to its historic past and to our national anthem – The Star-Spangled Banner. The reverse design was developed in consultation with representatives of Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine.
