Description
The 2013 5-Star Generals Commemorative Coin Program from the US Mint recognizes five of the greatest military leaders in US History. The 5-Star Generals that are recognized are: George Marshall, Douglas MacArthur, Dwight Eisenhower, Henry “Hap” Arnold, and Omar Bradley. All five of these men consist of the only World War II 5-Star Generals, and each is an alumnus of the US Army Command and General Staff College. The coin also celebrates the 132nd anniversary of the founding of this University.
This particular 2013 $5 coin is struck on a 8.36 gram 90% gold planchet, which equals .2419 troy ounces of pure 24k gold. The General being featured is General Douglas MacArthur, who graduated from West Point in 1903. He went on to serve for 52 years in the Army, eventually rising to the position of Chief of the Army General Staff. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his service in the Philippines, led forces to defeat the entire Empire of Japan, and eventually led the reconstruction efforts of the Japanese after WWII.
Obverse: A portrait of General Douglas MacArthur is featured with the 5-Star insignia to his right. Also inscribed are “IN GOD WE TRUST,” “DOUGLAS MACARTHUR,” “2013″ and “LIBERTY.”
Reverse: features the Leavenworth Lamp, the symbol of the US Army Command and General Staff College. Also inscribed are “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “FIVE DOLLARS” and “FORT LEAVENWORTH.”
