One of the, if not “THE” most important and iconic coins ever created by the US Mint is the Morgan Silver Dollar. Minted from 1878 to 1904, and then resumed again in 1921, these 90% silver coins have been a staple of the coin collecting community. Even more collectible, are those bearing the coveted “CC” mintmark for the Carson City Mint that opened in 1870. Up until June 1968, US Silver Certificates could be redeemed for a silver dollar at all Federal Reserve banking facilities. As the redemption period ended, the US Treasury transferred their remaining supply of silver dollars to the West Point Silver Bullion Depository in New York to hold for safety measures. Then, in 1970, Congress authorized the General Service Administration (GSA) to sell these remaining coins via auctions to the public. Today, Carson City Morgan silver dollars dominate the top of the list as the most desired and valuable of the Morgan silver dollar varieties, and for good reason. Due to their limited mintage, these are almost certain to only keep rising in value over time.
