Description
The 8th design in Provident Metals’ exclusive 12 Labors of Hercules series. Each Mares of Diomedes coin is struck in one troy ounce of .999 fine silver and was manufactured at the ISO9001 certified Provident Mint, which employs rigid quality standards to ensure each round is of the highest silver purity.
The mares — named Deinos, Lampon, Padargos and Xanthos — were to be captured by Hercules for his 8th task. King Diomedes of Thrace, who had trained the fire-breathing horses to feed on human flesh, was fought and defeated by Hercules, who then bound each of the mares’ mouths and brought them back to King Eurystheus, completing this test of strength.
Reverse: four mares in mid gallop with flowing manes and their mouths agape in a display of aggression. “MARES OF DIOMEDES” and Roman numeral “VIII” are inscribed near the rim.
Obverse: Hercules, with Nemean Lion’s skin draped over his head as armor, holding his wooden club in his right hand. “1 oz CMXCIX FINE SILVER” inscribed beside him.
Diameter: 39mm
