King Eurystheus had a daughter who yearned for possessing the girdle of Hippolyta. To make her happy, Eurystheus sent Hercules to steal the belt from Hippolyta, the queen of the Amazons. Hippolyta, impressed by Hercules, actually planned to give her belt to him; however, one of Hercules biggest foes, Hera, tricked Hercules into the extra work of killing Hippolyta and stealing the belt – completing his 9th task by bringing it back to the King’s daughter.
Reverse Hippolyta dressed in her girdle, clutching a spear in her left hand. “GIRDLE OF HIPPOLYTA” and “IX” are inscribed.
Obverse: Hercules, with Nemean Lion’s skin draped over his head as armor, holding his wooden club in his right hand. “1 oz CMXCIX FINE SILVER” inscribed beside him.
